Description
King Hill Farm is a diversified family farm. We integrate vegetables with livestock and produce our own hay and grain. For summer vegetables we have a late June through mid October CSA and sell at Blue Hill Farmers Market. Our meat is sold as freezer lamb, pork by the half, beef by the quarter, and Thanksgiving turkeys. October through early to-mid-winter we sell winter root crops to health food stores and co-ops along the coast from Blue Hill to Portland. Our vegetables are MOFGA certified organic. Our livestock is grass-fed, antibiotic and hormone free.
King Hill Farm is located in North Penobscot, Maine. First run by Dennis King and his brother, Ron, in the 1970s, and then by the husband and wife team of Dennis and Jo Barrett. Today the farm continues to evolve and with Jo’s help is run by MOFGA Journeypersons Amanda Provencher and Paul Schultz. Many MOFGA apprentices, WWOOFers, neighbors, and community members have been and continue to be an integral part of the farm.King Hill Farm is a family farm and homestead. We believe in the value of healthy soils, which promote vigor in the plants and animals that grow here. Besides fully mineralized, organic vegetables we raise a variety of grass-fed, free-range livestock. The diversity of our farm allows us to be a relatively closed system, minimizing off-farm inputs. Our fields and gardens are fertilized with homemade compost and we grow most of our own livestock feed. Our most important decisions are made with whole-farm ecology in mind.
To paraphrase Philip Wylie in The Magic Animal , “In the long term there is no economics; there is only ecology.”In addition to being environmentally conscious, King Hill Farm is involved in community projects that help educate children. We work with schools and other groups to teach the importance of healthy eating and where food comes from. Besides being members of MOFGA we also are active in the Maine Sustainable Agriculture Society and Maine Grassfarmer’s Network. Our products include more than 20 types of organic summer vegetables; meats including lamb, beef, pork, turkey, and chicken; and fall crops of carrots, beets, rutabagas, parsnips, and turnips.
