The North End Farmers Market has a Double Dollars Program providing families receiving food assistance benefits with the ability to get more for their money. If they shop with SNAP/EBT/Food Stamps,WIC, FMNP or Senior Vouchers, they can bring them to the info table at the market, and receive an equal amount to spend like cash on fresh fruit and veggies at the market, up to $60 per month! That gives families up to $120 per month in fresh produce. Funds for this matching funds program are obtained from foundation grant monies.
The market is a program of the North End Action Team (NEAT), a grassroots community organizing and advocacy group that evolved since 1996 when resident activists and organizers believed that a grassroots effort should be undertaken to develop resident-driven leadership to assess problems, determine priorities, and develop solutions to neighborhood issues. More information is available on all of NEAT's programs at: http://www.neatmiddletown.org/about.
