Initiative Objective
ICLEI was founded in 1990, at the World Congress of Local Governments for a Sustainable Future, at the United Nations in New York, as a call to action for governments around the world, dedicated to climate protection and sustainability. With a handful of local governments taking the lead, ICLEI USA was formed in 1995 and has grown their pilot project into a network of over 600 municipalities across the country who have committed to tangible reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and the creation of sustainable communities. ICLEI members vary from small towns to big cities and represent municipalities is virtually every state. Communities involved with ICLEI rank as the greenest towns and cities in the country and are leaders in creating sustainable communities. ICLEI provides tools and support to foster local action that helps America become greener.
