Initiative Objective
Single stream recycling, also known as "fully commingled" is a collection system that mixes all recyclable paper fibers and containers together in a bin at the curb and in the collection truck. In single stream, both the collection and processing systems are designed to handle this fully commingled mixture of recyclables.
Advantages include easier sorting that results in more recyclables placed at the curb and a higher percentage of people particiapting; can reduce collection costs, as single compartment trucks should be less expensive to purchase and operate, and collection routes can be serviced more efficiently; less materials carted to landfills which help the planet and reduces costs to municipalities.
