Description

Easthampton Mayor Michael Tautznik drove the initiative to develop a 2.3 megawatt (MW) solar installation on the City's Oliver Street Landfill. The project is part of an effort to utilize various brownfields (including landfills) throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut. These locations can be relatively inexpensive, underutilized, and in suitable locations for electric interconnection, making them ideally suited for solar energy development. To finance the project, the city of Easthampton entered into a “Power Purchase Agreement” with Borrego Solar Systems, Inc. Through the contract, the city of didn’t pay a dime in upfront costs. Instead, Borrego Solar covers the design and installation of the system, and also covers the ongoing maintenance. Borrego Solar will sell the energy produced back to the city of Easthampton, at a reduced and fixed rate. Over the lifetime of the contract, the system is expected to save the town nearly $1.5 million in energy costs.
